Posted by Mrs. Q on March 28, 2007, 11:35 am, in reply to "Monday Lowell Sun Editorial" I could share more than several experiences of people who work at Town Hall in a variety of clerical positions and the imcompetence that runs rampant throughout that building. It's a joke! I'm passionate about this because I'm a career adminstrative professional (23+ yrs), and it escapes me how we justify keeping some of these people. Maybe it's the "it's not what you know, it's who you know" scenario? During one recently botched experience with the Town Clerk's office (involving passports applications submitted by myself and my husband), I contacted our "illustrious" Town Manager, Mr. Longo (via email) about the fact that the Federal gov't couldn't find our applications (we paid for expedited service which we ultimately didn't get because of the mismanagement of the applications by one these so-called "clerks"). I pleaded with him to call me to discuss. I emailed him rather than calling so I could document beginning to end exactly what had happened and to allow him the time/courtesy to investigate what happened so he could respond intelligently to my issue. I guess I gave him too much credit. Evidently, he didn't feel it important enough to call me back to discuss or let me know how the situation would be remedied. I never heard from him! Does he realize that our tax dollars are paying his salary? That we are his customers? If I took it upon myself to decide that it was unimportant to call a customer back about an issue, I'd be standing in the unemployment line. My mother died last year after almost 45 years of living in this town. For at least 25 of those years, she was told that town sewerage was on the docket for her section of town but every year that went by there was some other excuse why the town couldn't provide it. So kudos to Mr. Lombardo for calling Mr. Longo to the carpet on yet another proposed misappropriation of funds!!! Our taxes and water bills keep rising every year and instead of recommending that we using this "gift" of money for something that will directly benefit the people who have stayed in this town through thick and thin, we're supposed to chew on his recommendation that we hire a bunch of people who will sit behind their desks every day making excuses about why they can't do their jobs? I hope our Selectmen/woman will seriously think this through before throwing more money to the very people who will just create more beaureacracy for it's residents. I for one have had enough of this stupidity!

Instead of hiring another "part-time clerk" for his office, maybe he should clean house and replace the incompetent people that currently work at Town Hall with administrative professionals who actually take pride in their jobs instead of just collecting paychecks. I've lived in Billerica my entire life (41+ yrs), and I'm embarrased by the incompetence of these so-called "clerks" that "grace" our Town Hall.
