It can't honestly be said that Ashpoint, Virginia, is booming, exciting, or even very interesting. It boats a grand total of no more than 2000 people, with the majority of those living in its rural surroundings. The people of the sleepy little town never really broke away from old traditions. While the older citizens may still croak the mantra, "Early to bed, early to rise," Ashpoint is not all nursing homes and senior centers. Indeed, it has recently been gaining a reputation for its horses and riders, of all things.
For years, two fiercely competitive barns based in Ashpoint have been butting heads; encroaching on one another's territory. Foxtail Farms and Hilcrest Stables, run by Taylor Richards and Michael Hilcrest respectively, have never been foreign names among the Grand Prix crowd, but it wasn't until recently that the students of the famed riders have begun to show some real results in the ring. From pre-level 1 through the Grand Prix circuit, Foxtail and Hilcrest riders have excelled. In their wake, sleepy little Ashpoint has been flooded with riders and horses, barns popping up like weeds and bringing with them a new level of sport, and a new beginning for Ashpoint.
Regardless of the new barns and how the competition was growing at a seemingly endless rate, Hilcrest and Foxtail easily kept their reputations as the best of the best. Now, with USEF-rated shows and an equestrian metropolis booming on its fringes, Ashpoint draws in serious riders not only as a stop along circuit, but as a home.
