Our beloved brother, Sam Baker, of Lakewood, Colorado (formerly of Austin, TX) passed away last night, March 21, at Lutheran Medical Center here in Denver. Cause of death was liver failure. He had been in ICU for about 30 days before his death but exhibited his strong faith and wonderful sense of humor until about a week before his death. He is survived by his sons, Matthew and Andy Baker, both of Austin; five grandchildren of Austin; his former wife, Nancy Armistead Baker, also a Ft.Stockton High graduate; and five siblings: Frank K. Baker of Austin, Robert (Bob) Baker of Broomfield, CO, Anne Gifford of Allen, Texas, Kay Baker of Petaluma, CA, and John Baker of Richmond, VA.
The Baker family gathered in Colorado Saturday night for a private memorial service, and a public service is pending in Denver, CO. Sam was a retired employee of the Texas Dept. of Mental Health and Retardation. He had spent the last 20 years writing and publishing small Christian booklets aimed at terminally ill patients and others in need of encouragement. He was well known everywhere he lived for his keen sense of humor, musical talent, and remarkable acting skills. He is well remembered as the director of many Ft.Stockton Water Carnival events during his youngter years. His parents were longtime Ft. Stockton newspaper publishers George and Emily Baker, who preceded him in death.
