Hi Amy,
Using a paint brush to apply the henna is a great option for larger patterns. It would be fun to use the brushes for a large flowing back peice or vines and swirls climbing up the leg.
If you're looking for more traditional smaller or tight patterns for hands a bottle or cone applicator would really work best and allow for more precise control.
To get the best color you want to focus on appying a nice even coat of henna paste. The more henna on the skin, the more henna is able to soak in and provide a darker, longer lasting color.
The brushes are a great option and would lend themselves to large organic patterns. There are lots of great tools that can be used for varying results.
Have fun and experiment, after all it's not permanent!
