Posted by Louis H. Pumphrey Where Ms. Donaldson and I diverge is her opinion of Kucinich as one who stands up "for what's right." That's not entirely true, although it was before Kucinich entered the 2004 presidential race. Sadly, tragically - and ironically, for a man who posits himself as one who stands with those having no voice - former pro-lifer Kucinich now supports the right to choose to slay the most defenseless, vulnerable and voiceless members of the human family, our nation's unborn sons and daughters. My guess is that before the run-up to the 2004 presidential election, the powers that be in the Democratic Party took Kucinich to the proverbial woodshed for a good whuppin', as I'm certain happened to former presidential candidate the Rev. Jesse Jackson several years ago, who also flip-flopped from being pro-life to pro-choice before first running for president in 1984. It is not unreasonable to conclude that the presidential aspirants were told that if they want a forum in the Democratic Party, they must cross over to the dark side and become pro-choice. From my perspective, the ideal presidential candidate is one who mirrors a consistent respect for human life, which would include refusing to discriminate against the most vulnerable members of the human family because of their place of residence, i.e. the womb. In other words, such a candidate would opt not to choose the regressive, uncivilized and morally bankrupt pro-choice tenet that the fetus is property to be disposed of at will, for any reason or for no reason. In a truly civilized society, solving the most challenging problems in life would rely on the intellect and the resiliency of the human spirit, rather than turning to weapons of crass destruction - be they needles used to kill death-row inmates, suction machines used to kill unborn children, or bombs and bullets used to kill our fellow human beings in Iraq (and that war has resulted in the deaths of more than 3,500 of our sons and daughters in uniform). I have great admiration and respect for Kucinich's clear, consistent opposition to the insanity of this ignoble endeavor in Iraq and for introducing the articles of impeachment for Cheney, but by figuratively giving the back of his hand to our nation's unborn sons and daughters, the former pro-lifer has revealed himself to be a crass political opportunist. Shame on him.

I agree with Denise Donaldson's praise for Dennis Kucinich regarding his long-standing opposition to the unconscionable war in Iraq and for introducing articles of impeachment for Vice President Dick Cheney (Letters, "Go get 'em, Dennis," June 6.) That Kucinich's fellow Democrats have dismissed his Cheney impeachment initiative out of hand reveals the party has a spine akin to that of a jellyfish. We as a nation are in much worse trouble than we realize, partly because of weak-willed Democrats allowing themselves to be jerked around by George W. Bush and his cabal of fellow arrogant, sociopathic evildoers.
