His small stature should never be confused with small ideas. U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich shared his vision with Native American Times while attending Prez on the Rez at Morongo Casino Thursday August 23, 2007. Surrounded by a small but dedicated group of supporters, Kucinich talked about why he should be President of the United States.
Often considered the most liberal of all the men who would be president, he is also someone who is no stranger to Indian country. One of the few men who has actually gone to Indian country to campaign, Kucinich told NAT the reason Native voters should support him is ?because my candidacy relates to the spirit of the Native American, to the land, to the essential rights of people , to freedom and self determination and for peace,? and when asked in real terms what that meant he shot back ?it means our children won?t have to die in wars based on lies, it means our children will have an education fully paid for from age three to college.? The Native American Times interviewed Kucinich four years ago at the Albuquerque meeting of NCAI.
Kucinich also shared with the rest of the press that he is in favor of pulling out of Iraq immediately using the funds sent to the president along with bringing back all American equipment. He favors leaving an international force in place of American troops.
On being one of the few Presidential hopefuls attending Prez on the Rez Kucinich told the NAT ?it goes to the heart of the next president is, if your heart is with Native American you?d be here today, those of who are here today have shown respect for the culture and traditions of Indian people.? Kucinich said he would use Native values in running the country. His new wife Michelle was by his side and said at their wedding they used Native elements in the ceremony.
?I want to bring into the Oval Office the wisdom of our elders that is close to nature,? Kucinich said. He also talked about the negative treatment of Indian people over the years.
?By looking at treaties and looking for where they?ve been broken and to give reparations where we can,? Kucinich told the Native American Times.
One onlooker said ?I don?t know what kind of chance he has but you always get the feeling he?s telling the truth.? Kucinich then went into the forum for Prez on the Rez moderated by distinguished Indian journalist Mark Trahant where he shared his message with the attendees.
