Posted by curtis Now, wait a minute y'all!! This is no violent story. This is a sad; but funny story of my and Don's younger days. The main players are: Don, Donald Gillespie and I. The story was played on the playground of Levelland Junior High School-what you "young folks" call East Ward, I think. Back in the old days, one of the favorite games on the rocky, hard, rough playground of Jr. High was "tackle" football. Without pads, mind you! It was recess time and we were having an exciting game, thanks to the abilites of the little jackrabbit, Donald Gillespie. (Rest his soul, he left us a void recently...) Donald was a real running back in playground days. This particular day he was playing on the other team against Don Maynard's and my team. And may I say, "He was eating our lunch, stamping our clock and fixing our wagon." When he came through the line it was like trying to catch a greased pig loose on the field. Don and I made this plan. We would "fix his wagon!" Our plan: The next time Gillespie came through the line we would both hit him at the same time. I would hit him high and Don would hit him low. Well, here he came! And here Don came! And here I came! I hit 'im high. Don, he hit him high. (But Don, you were supposed to him 'em low!) But the trouble was: Neither of us hit 'im anywhere! Gillespie ducked the both of us and I hit Maynard in the nose with my head! And so, now you "know the rest of the story" of how one day I broke Don Maynard's nose. Maynard went on to break and set records in professional football. If you have not tired of reading, you may click on the link below and read of Don Maynard's feats in his great football career. I have not attached a link before, so it may not work.... Thanks!
