Yeah , everybody knows Charlie Rich as a Country singer from the sixties and seventies who started out recording R&R on the Sun label with the likes of Elvis Presley in the 1950's etc. But I always knew he did a little Jazz
and some Blues etc. One day I picked up a tape of his early stuff and could have sworn it was
by a Black R&B singer from the sixties , thats how soulful it was. Later I found out that some of his
stuff is on Northern Soul comps. I have a feeling that he was forced to go Country and he rather would
have done R&B , Soul with Jazz and Blues if thats where the money was.
So , I don't know that much about the "Soul Side" of Charlie Rich apart from that tape which I can't
find . So if someone has recommendations , I'll be thankful.
This below is from the ACE records website.

CHARLIE RICH Don't Tear Me Down
by on NORTHERN SOUL'S CLASSIEST RARITIES
________________________________________
From the Silver Fox's brief tenure at Hi Records, which also produced another Northern classic in his
version of Isaac Hayes and David Porter's 'Love Is After Me' as well as some beautiful Hank Williams
covers. Charlie Rich was a musical genius, equally adept at soul, country, jazz and rock'n'roll ("I
don't think I ever recorded anyone who was better," said Sam Phillips), not to mention almost
single-handedly making grey hair look cool. It was the soulfulness of his voice, as demonstrated on
this cut, that prevented his later, Billy Sherrill-produced songs such as 'Behind Closed Doors' and
'The Most Beautiful Girl' from becoming schmaltzy. I find it impossible to dislike anything he ever
recorded.
