Michelle: I agree with the fish oil completely as something that will be very helpful to your dog in enhancing its immune system. You are in the right place using the Menhaden fish oil as it is pure without additives.
I have to wonder about the "seasonal allergies". Most dogs with allergic reactions are food reactions. Even tho you have not changed the food, if that is the case, the food companies sometimes make subtle changes that you will not be aware of. Often keeping the dog on the same food for a long period of time can cause a negative reaction because of the build up of some ingredient in the food that in its system. If you care to share information with me about the food you are using I do have some very good sources of information that might also be helpful.
If the meds are not working then something else has to be the culprit. For some reason the dog's immune system is not working full blast and has allowed an intruder into the mix. A strong healthy well nourished dog should not react to much of anything other than direct trauma. I am in no way practicing vet medicine but many years of experience with dogs has opened doors and many of the old ideas need to be upgraded.
This year I had a dog acquire a fungus from the soil as he digs massive deep holes and got a strange rash on his head. I discovered that a couple of feet down in the earth there are many kinds of fungus living. A long time breeder and friend of mine who is a geologist told me about how miners and people who do caving have problems with this kind of thing. This took some doing and there is a product on the market called "Horseman's Dream" which is a wonderful cream with aloe and it cured the strange rash. Like Bag Balm it is something that works well for pressure hot spots and any skin irritation and is very inexpensive. Kind of like Avons Skin So Soft that keeps bees away while it certainly was not designed for such. I found this out from roadside workers who have been using it for years. Sharing information is always a positive plan.
If you would care to expand on the "allergic reaction" of your dog perhaps we can be of assistance with someone in the same boat and possibly find out how we can help. Meanwhile the fish oil certainly is the right beginning.
