You are absolutely on target with your appraisal of the talent of Doug Harvel and of Higdon Kenny and their contributions to the legacy of the FHS Band.
Here are a couple of additional tid bits about Higdon.
His wife, Bee, was a WWII, German war bride. A brilliant person. They left Forest and relocated to Chicago because of her job transfer. I do not remember her vocation. (My favorite statement to students my first year in Forest when they told me how Mr.Kenny had done things was "but Mr. Kenny is in Chicago now". SA 😃me should have listened more. Thanks again to all you students for saving me.
I'm not sure of how long he remained in Chicago, probably only a year or so. As the 1958 Lions All-State Band marched down Michigan Avenue, Clyde Morgan, a percussionist in that band , reported that someone call to him from the street side. That someone bring Higdon Kenny.
He did come back to Jackson and became the Provine director, but as you stated he died a short time later. I'm not sure of the nature of his illness or of his time at Provine but the initial director at that new school in 1956 was Louie Pullio who moved over from Jackson Central and Jack Jones came there in '61 or '62. So his stay at Provine was a short one.
Veronica was indeed a most talented Oboeist/EnglishHornist. The time frame would suggest that she was the Drum Major for Jack than for her Dad.
Thanks for sturring my memory.
