Sue Austin Thigpen, 74, of West Point passed away on August 6, 2018 at Northwest Mississippi Medical Center. Mrs. Thigpen was a graduate of Forest High School and Mississippi State University. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Sue loved Mississippi State Basketball throughout her life, and she could be seen at all home games cheering on her beloved Bulldogs. She was a dedicated volunteer at the West Point Animal Shelter, and she spent many hours helping to find homes for dogs. Often, she would taken them home as her own because of her love of animals.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in West Point.
Sue is survived by her husband of 53 years, Jim, and her daughters and their families, Caroline and Paul, Austin, Alex, Jack and Jude of Evans, Georgia; Jamie and Carter, Keeton and Caroline of Arcola, Mississippi. She also is survived by her mother, Opal Wilkes Austin, and three siblings, Jesse William Austin, Jr., Judy Austin Webb and Terry L. Austin. She was preceded in death by her father, Jesse William Austin, Sr., her brother, Richard Buford Austin, her daughter, Emily Opal Thigpen, and her grandson, John Andrew Matthews.
A memorial service will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in West Point at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 with visitation from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please remember Sue with a donation to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or the West Point Humane Society. She also would encourage giving strong consideration to donating your body to science, as she did to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, to help educate and train more physicians and other health care professionals, which can only be achieved by studying the human body.
