Frustration can easily set in when only seen from one point of view. Lets not start to criticize one aspect of the web site because people are using it. This was the whole idea of adding a feature like this, to get MORE INDIVIDUALS involved with the club and the site.
Based on the response so far it appears to be working. Involvement in one area can greatly increase the chances of help and assistance in other areas, in this case the database.
With the changing of the club site comes some growing pains that I am sure can be resolved. We need a couple things that are right now omitted. The Flickr side is showing that people can do a lot of things, show a shelf full of glasses, show individual glasses, show items of interest with the glasses, highlight a few glasses at once and more. Not all of those aspects fall into the same criteria of what is needed for the database as one is not going to post a shelf full of glasses in the database or comment about a glass.
So now we know we need to fix some things so lets work on those things next and see if we can get a time line of accomplishment. We need to have 2 links and pages made. One is for people to pay for a membership with paypal, the other is a glass submission link. Even if we had one previously, I think we need to make it available right from a link on every page.
We have had some stringent requirements on background, size, etc and that may be one reason for peoples lack of submission. Clearly we do not want some random background but I think something like a plain background with preference of light blue or white. Oddly enough, I deal with people every day that do not know how to size pictures. This is in part to many of the programs that people are using. I have 2 on my computer, one deals with image size in inches but the other only uses pixel dimensions. Another item is the use of the watermark. If someone wants credit for their submission, they can use this feature but I think it is something no longer needed. Originally was used so some pictures could not be used in a book but as more time passes the more we see that book might never be finished. Other information needed would be the size of the glass and year it was produced if known.
Flickr and the database have 2 entirely different purposes and both work opposite of each other. With Flickr, you can browse pages at random, never knowing what you will see, you can not find something specific like all Batman glasses. With the database, you have over 12,000 glasses but you have to search for a specific range or item. If you search Batman, it will show you all glasses associated with batman but you will not see a Scooby Doo or Grape Ape. It might also be time that we look to add on the search engine a way to browse through the database. I know technology is changing all time and have NO IDEA how to do those things, just know it would be another useful tool.
So let us take this new Flickr and member involvement and expand from that.
