As far as doing away with SS..I don't think that's a possibility..at least in the foreseeable future but what could be done is an enforced pay deduction, just as SS is now, with the proceeds going into a personal IRA account where there is more of a choice as to how the money is invested. Since SS is based on earnings, the poor would not be impacted any more than they are today, we are all not getting the same amount in our monthly checks. I believe that I read somewhere if the monies deducted in the past had been privately invested, the returns to the individuals today would have been much greater. That is not to say economics would be the same in the future. Disability insurance now distributed through SS would or could be treated the same way. The main difference would be who is holding the funds.
