While a page of several photos can be scanned (without any protective sheeting covering them). Each photo needs to be treated separately because each one has its own attributes. The pictures should be cropped to get rid of all that extra white paper. This isn't a one-two-three job and does take time.
As you can see, doing it your way, they are terrible and not worth your time.
This is a professional photo from the late 1800's, the original quality of the photo was better so the results are too...
This is a snapshot of me taken around the same time as yours. The original scanned was no more than 1"x1" and it was all I could do to see it in the hard copy. Enlarged in the computer.
