A drunk driver killed my father's best friend in the 1960s. The person had been in several accidents before, driving drunk. Why was he still on the road? George left his wife Mary to care for 2 daughters, one a pre-teen and the older girl, a mentally and physically challenged teen - plus both his mother and her mother who were living with them in a large house in Westbury. Despite his life Ins, SS and whatever they got from the drunk, the women eventually lost everything. I wished death on that drunk a million times. I wonder how many other people he killed or maimed after George.
One of my male friends from MV, a NYC cop, was hit by a drunk driver who had been in several accidents also... and she had no Ins. He was on his way home in Nassau Co. after his night shift. Why was SHE still free to maim and kill? She was speeding and hit him so hard the car was totaled, his face and chest was smashed, legs and feet/ankles broken as the car crumpled. I can't even remember all the injuries he suffered. He was forced to retire after being in the Hosp for weeks, then weeks of physical therapy. Even plastic surgery couldn't restore John's looks. Unable to afford the Island, they had to sell the house and move upstate. He was left crippled for life.
I wished death on her also before she maimed or killed another person. I have no sympathy for those who choose to drink and drive. They've killed millions of innocent people.
You may remember the Nashville drunk with more DUIs than I have hair on my head who ran over the curb and killed a pregnant woman, a lawyer on the sidewalk. A well loved good woman. She was crushed against something, both she and the unborn died. Even friends in NY at the time heard about it. People who witnessed it were horrified. Everyone wanted to know why someone with all those DUIs was still on the street and still driving. Nothing changed. The drunks are still out there, still maiming and killing....
