I think it was rude on a couple of counts. Who is invited to dinner and orders, no less eats, before another dinner companion arrives unless the companion is incredibly late. Even more appalling if they know they are being treated. Not only rude, ignorant! I'd be furious. Even if their reason was to grab and hold the table if the place was crowded...they could have ordered a beverage and munched on the bread usually served, stalling the waiter with the expectation of another person. I don't know if I'd pick up the tab under these circumstances. If the friend is close, they'd hear about it because the displeasure will only fester if not vented. It would be the last invitation they'd ever get from me.
