The problem with using only Windows Defender as I see it is that it is not Microsoft's main interest. It does protect against software weaknesses, bolstering or protecting coding soft spots known to have been breached but every day there are new challenges coming up of ways to "beat the system". A measure of defense, but slow to keep up with what a dedicated source might pick up, until it reaches more epic proportions. If you get caught in a new bug, as I did, that hasn't effected the general user population yet, it is not enough. Now well known, this particular threat was deemed an impossibility at the time, but Norton, getting world wide reports was on it within the week.
