Well, here's my 2 cents; I agree with Chuck and get a 12amp MSD Pro Mag, because as you improve your combo you'll need more ignition. When you increase combustion pressure thru more compression, more fuel, more timing, more cam, and higher RPM's you will need more spark power. You can tell you are running out of amps when you have to reduce your plug gap to keep it from missing. One year I was helping-out Wayne Ramay, you know the guy that sold his JrFuel chassis to Ricky, at the NHRA National event in Sonoma when we just couldn't figure out why it kept missing.
Even after we had the mag and points box checked out at the MSD trailor and they couldn't figure it out, we reduced the plug gap from .022 to .015, it fixed it. What it told us was we needed to upgrade to a 20amp mag because with the only change of a bigger fuel pump, it increased the combustion pressure, so more spark was needed. Ask Millsap and Johnnie, ALL the the JrFuel guys out west, including the SWJFA legal cars ; Bob McKray, JD Zink, John Rasmussen, Neil O'Kane all use MSD mags at least 12 amp. By-the-way did you see McKray/Enriquez ran a 7.18, and John Rasmussen ran a 7.23 [legal SWJFA cars].
Vertex mags,or Mallory Super Mag ll, which you can buy on Racing Junk. com for $300 only put out 1 to 2 amps will hold you back even if you "have'nt had any trouble with them" YET.
Ask Mike or call your sponsor, Smilley's because they sell sprint car stuff, and sprint cars use MSD 12 amp mags. Or check-out the dirt track pits for used mags.Ya, I know they will cost more than the Vertexs and Mallory, but if you improve your combos, you'll need a MSD.
Now as far as spinning the motor over fast enough to fire these small monsters, we use, and again all the guys out west, use two 12 volt batteries in series, thus 24 volt, and a light weight CSR starter with no problems, unless you forget to charge the batteries before the event.
We all use the battery packs remote, ala not in the car because of the weight. If you set-up your car so it doesn't kill on the burn-out you will not need any battery in the car to start the racecar. Just a small light battery for transbrake, shift light, and computer.Only JD Zink has two 12 volt batteries in the nose of his racecar because he needs that much weight to make weight and to balance out the FED, and sometimes it's just JD and his wife at the races.
By-the-way Hayden sells a 27 lbs hand held battery starter pack, just like Hammer/Hansen has been using for 6 years.
Thanks for reading my post !
