thanks for the response---prostantheras (at least p. elleptica) do alright here on the coast with occassional frost damage in cold winters (like this one). luckily, if we want a good "blue" flowering plant we have lithodora that grows like a (beautiful) weed around here. surprised that you have trouble with hebes where you are as in reality they are regarded as optimal for northern california (sunset 15-17). would assume that the further inland you might get the more they would need part shade, some summer water, and good drainage??????
