I wonder how many Proteaceae Allen Hirsh has tried. Certainly there are many Grevillea species and hybrids worth attempting. Yes, G. juniperina (all forms) should be hardier than most G. rosmarinifolia. And they are appealing, showy plants too. There are a lot of victoriae x juniperina hybrids, many of which are quite hardy. 'Poorinda Constance' and 'Poorinda Queen' are two.
Most of my potted Proteaceae tend to get Proteoid roots, since I don't feed them heavily. That way they do better once they get in the ground anyways.
A lot of my Grevillea collection in Olympia is struggling now, because we have had such a long winter, preceded by a cool wet summer, and they are getting shaded out by the eucs. I'm trying to rescue cuttings from each of them to replant at the new place in Sequim.
Grevillea 'Clearview David'
Grevillea 'Poorinda Queen'
Grevillea 'Poorinda Elegance'
