Lets look at Rollins and Randall to start.
This is a great study on that.
Randall was called the best CB on the field coming into the season by many here at TalkinPackers. Rollins had actually taken the majority of snaps from Hyde the second half of the 2015 season.
Randall was impressive as a Safety making the change to CB and he made plays of that there is no doubt, but also made some huge mistakes.
But the talent was evident.
Then come 2017 Shields is lost for the season, those touting Randall as the best CB on the field also were talking about Shields being expendable with his big contract number.
Rollins was injured right out of the gate in training camp and the pre season.
Randall was injured soon after the start of the season.
Neither played very well through out the 2016 season.
And both were hindered considerably in making a step up in 2017, LOT'S of lost snaps, way less practice time through out the season.
And now for many throughout the Packer nation they are both TOTAL busts and need to be replaced NOW!
So which is it? What is the aberration? 2015 or 2016?
Are they both busts and TT has to draft CB's HIGH, sign FA CB's?
Or two talented players what were injured and just not ready for the step up in responsibility from the #2 CB and Dime CB to #3 in 2016?
Very similar with the ILB's. Beginning of the season Ryan and Martinez were being praised across the board. And IMO rightly so, both played some good football.
Then Ryan had a ankle injury and missed games, Martinez had a knee injury and missed more games then Ryan and neither were as good as the start of the season.
At the end of the season many places and people are saying that they need to go to.
Speed Speed Speed was called for, I found it interesting that comparisons were made in a article that showed a difference in speed of .02 seconds was worth mentioning as a speed deficit.
Allison can replace Cobb, Nelson just doesn't have it any more, Rodgers is no longer a top QB, HHCD was a missed pick too, he doesn't make enough big plays.
All of these statement were made.
Randall, Rollins, Lawry, Clark, Hawkins, Dorleant, Spriggs, Martinez, Ryan, Davis, Allison, Brice, Fackrell, Evans, Gunter, Murphy and Patrick are all players off the top of my head that can and should make the team better in 2017.
Some will? None will? Give up now? OFF WITH THEIR HEADs!!!
I think for Randall and Rollins 2016 is the aberration.
And that both Clark and Lowry will have a big impact on the 2017 defense.
A second year Martinez and a further developed Ryan will improve the defense.
Players like Allison, Davis, Hawkins, Deloreant and Fackrell will do the same.
You add a new draft class and maybe and that is a big maybe a few signings it is a different team and yes a better team with or without some big FA signing.
