I'm not saying Patrick or Murphy can be at good at Taylor this year... but the gap SHOULD be a lot closer after a full season and their first full off season.
And again... if they REALLY need a guy, they have Spriggs sitting on the bench.
If Linsley goes down, I believe Barcaly will be the back-up that goes in.
Back-ups at OLB and CB are different... because those positions are MUCH MUCH more likely to rotate in and out throughout the season. Where as the OL tries to rotate as little as possible.
~ Last year (2016) 4 of the Packers 5 OL played at least 70% of the offensive snaps.
~ Last year (2016), Only one CB of the Packers CB played 70% of the defensive snaps.
~ Last year (2016) Not a single OLB of the Packers played at least 60% of the Packers defensive snaps.
OLB and CB often have their back-ups on the field... where as interior OL often have their back-ups on the bench.
Like I believe I said in the first post... I want the Packers to upgrade their OL too... and have been keeping an eye on
C/OG Pat Elflein, Ohio State
C/OG Ethan Pocic, LSU
But they're potential starters with an open spot... not saying they'll earn it, but they can battle for it.
But I don't want to fill the back-up spot just to fill the back-up spot which is what need to a degree is.
The starting roles, including some back-ups of the positions that rotate a lot (ie WR, RB, DL, OLB, CB) are more important than back-ups at positions that don't rotate a lot.
And there are certain excepts... as with positions you won't be able to find later, ie LT... you need a decent option back-up at LT.
But normally interior OL depth is easier to find than other position.
