I also think the gap containment is being overemphasized. Matthews is not paid big $$ to sit in a gap and fight a blocker, his job is to pass rush. Sometimes he misreads and a gap is created, but he is far from the only pass rusher who does that. Few pass rushers, especially speed/space rushers like Matthews are perfect against the run and it is unrealistic to expect him to be perfect.
When Matthews penetrates and a runner goes around him, do any of us or the tv commentators really know if he is actually blowing his gap assignment? Or is it a situational gamble in Capers' scheme where Clay is supposed to penetrate based on run/pass likelihood?
