Look at Seahawks - they had one of the greatest defenses ever while Wilson was on his rookie contract. Once Wilson signed for the big bucks, that defense (and team overall) has never been the same.
Remember too, things are down a bit re: attendance, ratings, etc. The cap has been going up and up for years, which is what creates those situations where a player signs a HUGE, seemingly cap-busting, contract, and it looks like a bargain in a few years because the cap went up. But sooner or later, the other shoe is going to fall - what looks like a fair deal this year could become a massive albatross should the cap suddenly decline...
Just something to think about.
