Yes, the hand holds him back slightly, in the respect that he basically has to play with a club that he can't used to grab and pull... which would be most helpful in getting off of blocks and tackling (and really getting off blocks is the huge factor). And so I think Griffen is going to need to be used a bit more like a SS in the NFL than he was in college.
IMO Griffen's biggest problem is that he's an odd tweener... moves like a CB, size of a huge SS but I just haven't seen him lined up against enough WRs in coverage.
But I think it all depends on the system... I think Griffen could be a perfect fit as a dime coverage LB, basically being used the same role as Josh Jones when he was flashing huge and blitzing off the side, which our new DC loves to do.
But how often will the defense be in dime defense? And how does Griffen fit in nickel and base?
But between Jones and Griffin, the team would be stocked and set for the SS/LB tweeners and have edge blitzing coverage LBers extremely well covered.
