I honestly believe the desire to add more OT depth is more about injuries than giving up on anyone.
Bulaga might not be 100% coming into training camp and there were some concerns that he might start on the PUP list. Spriggs has gotten injured quicker and more often than Bulaga... and when healthy Spriggs has shown us nothing SO FAR to think he's the long term answer. Murphy has shown some potential, but he's limited athletically.
The Packers NEED a good back-up OT that has the potential to become starter when Bulaga's contract runs up. Right now, they haven't shown that... but they got guys with raw abilities... but they haven't flashed enough, nor have they been able to stay healthy... why not grab another? Especially since this one won't become a FA until two years after Spriggs and Murphy.
If Spriggs or Murphy bloom, GREAT! Then we might have Bulaga's replacement and the future back-up already on the roster. Though I think Murphy might be a great OG.
And we need to protect the QB!
