At first my reaction was to dismiss the writers viewpoint as clearly wrong, but if I'm playing devil's advocate or at least entertaining his premise as potentially having merit, the signing does make some sense.
Weve discussed the Packers new approach of trying to generate pressure from up the middle, and while Hankins is not what you might think of as a pure pass rushers he does add some value as more of a balanced run stuffer with periodic pass rush potential. Plus, as we've seen over the years, injuries can turn a unit of assumed strength into a pile of ashes in the blink of an eye. At the very least Hankins would provide a solid backup and a potential piece to give guys like Daniels, lowry, and Mowilk a breather.
At 26 he should still have some tread on the tires, and with the upgrades the Packers are making he may feel joining GB is his best chance at a ring.
At the risk of turning this into a novel, signing him to a one-year deal may also turn out to bring GB an additional comp pick if he performs well and leaves next near (same as MoWilk).
