I agree having an open spot on the 53 man roster was annoying (or guy that we all knew their season was done and gonna be going to the IR) hanging on the 53 man roster for weeks. I think Thompson enjoyed the roster flexible that it gave, where he could sign any position (or bring up a PS guy if another team tried to sign one of them away).
BUT that being said, by my count, there are only 88 players on the Packers roster, 2 short of the current limit. So Gute doesn't currently have a full roster either.
So far, the things I think Gute has done differently than maybe Thompson would have are.
~ The swap of Nelson/Graham... it wasn't a direct swap, but contract wise it basically was. I haven't seen Thompson do something like that.
~ Signing Tramon Williams (I was calling for signing both Tramon and House last year)
~ The Draft: Usually Thompson like guys that do a lot of the little things right already and grew upon them, where Gute seems to go purely after the best athletes (or large athletes). But I've read and checked out the numbers and overall they average out in the top ten percent of a number of athletic testing stuff.
Gute likes large and athletic, even if they need more development... of course that's generally how all of football has gone, as all of them have gone to more simple spread it out schemes and let athletes make plays. NFL has changed to that, partly due to college and the less practice time due to the CBA.
The Packers under Thompson reportedly tried to sign OT Bell twice before under Thompson, so I don't see that as any different... just maybe he had less options this time.
I'm not sure about TE Lewis, but he sounds like a great veteran leadership and run blocking that only cost $2.1 million, I think Thompson might do something like that.
