I was a DT/RT/OG ... so I know linemen stuff better (not all), and struggle more with the breaking down of passing routes.
But Pettine's scheme is hard to explain, as he basically can mix up anything he wants, for the sack of confusion and/or freeing up someone else.
Such as the edge rushers aren't always on the edge... as they will dive on the inside of an OT which either gives a DB one blocker to beat or a free shot at the ball carrier. That's why this scheme generally looks for bigger edge rushers more than the traditional 3-4 OLB, and could use a guy like Wilkerson who can be a 4-3 DE or DT.
But as Pettine said, he also at times has used Clay Matthews in coverage a lot... more than I think Pettine wanted too, as they didn't have some other type Pettine wanted. I'm not sure if that was Jake Ryan, or more of a Burks type stepping up. But Clay's versatility was a huge asset last year, and I think Pettine loves versatility.
