You know why the league didn’t trade big for Justin Fields? In the stickiest statistics in the league is pressure to sack rate (when a QB gets pressured, what percent of those pressures turn into a sack). Fields is one of the highest in the league and has been that way since he entered the league.
So has the league learned its lesson? Doesn’t look like it. Enter LSU QB Jayden Daniels. 30% pressure to sack ratio in 22 and 20% in 23. I can’t imagine that stat is going to go down when Daniels comes into the league where everyone is bigger faster stronger. Especially when he likely joins a below average team.
You know why Sam Darnold is getting his 15th chance to be a starter? Because he came into the league at 20 years old as a raw but talented prospect. His film wasn’t great, but his highs were impressive. Teams talked themselves into being a young guy who just needed time to grow. If he could just develop he could be a star, the league told itself. He’s still only 26 and it’s laughable he’s still getting starting chances.
So has the league learned its lesson? Doesn’t seem like it. Enter Michigan QB JJ McCarthy. The Michigan offense had a great running game so McCarthy didn’t need to do much. But when it came time for Michigan to move the ball you know what McCarthy did? Not much. He did not throw with anticipation, he did not make progressions and he doesn’t have an elite arm (it’s above average but not special). So why is he seen as a top 10 pick? He’s 20 years old and can scoot. Teams are talking themselves into McCarhy just needing time to develop.
I love this stupid thing we call the NFL Draft
