"One thing to consider is that Texas was a poor state when entering the union in 1846. There was some uniforms from the Republic era that were purchased by the state but as in most cases such fancy uniforms were purchased by the owner thus some pretty God awful uniforms were created. Not knowing exactly what the buttons on this uniform looks like it is hard to say it was from the days of the Republic. If newer (1860's) I still would guess it was a private purchase by someone of means for a home town militia. I do not believe it to be a band uniform as most always they were of bright red material so they would stand out on the field of battle."
"The most telling identification detail about the coat is probably the back mark of the buttons, which is not clearly/completely visable. Speculation: the coat looks like something from a Texas wild west show."
So Neal...can you get a better view of the front of the buttons and look to see if there is anything on the back of the button?
