A magick circle is said to be used as some sort of barrier and also a kind of space where it is cut off from the world where you are in that little magickal space for ritual. Imagine it as a multi-purpose kind of object. It provides protection from incoming psi attacks or disturbances , it opens up a special space between the worlds for your magick , it acts as some sort of stable where the summoned energy can be held in it so that you can release the contained energy at one short rather than having the energy dissipate into the surrounding right after summoning the energy as believed by occultist and magickians (anyone doing magick). Some circles are rumoured that they are so well formed that passerbys don't even noticed one group of magickians or the atmosphere(air pressure , temperature) in the circle is so different when there's nothing physically seperating the spaces.
When you are more advance , you can just cast magick anywhere without the need for a circle (according to some articles on magick circle), which is true.
