Your heart is in the right place Celeste but be careful Nancy could have taken up your offer. I let a friend of my daughter and her two small children move in; "short time till she and her boyfriend got it together". Long story short 2 1/2 years later two boyfriends later and with three kids she moved back out. I have to admit i enjoyed having the patter of little feet in the house; small children keep me young they have such a positive and innocent outlook but i could do without the adult drama. Maybe your shields just need to be more selective not more powerful; maybe i should try that more selective stuff myself come to think of it.
