C, just read your rant. I know just how you feel
'cause I had the same thing happening to my computer. Took it into my super duper computer guy and he could not fix it. (Usually he's great) Long story short... it turned out to be that my computer was over heating and the computers answer to that is to shut down. Solution: Had someone take it apart and clean it. (lots of animal hair and dust). Works great now. Try it.
