I feel your frustration. I just got through working on a friends swell computer; aaaaahhh 
. I suggested she throw it in the nearest trash can but like you her budget is limited so i finally got it to work after adding more ram that i finally got the thing to accept. The connection problem might be vista and firewall conflicts? or maybe an intermitant modem if you are on dial up.
