First, how do you know this man is spreading false rumors about you and your husband? Who is he telling these lies to? If he is, why don't you simply ask him why he's spreading lies about you, where he got the information he's spreading about you two from, and correct the situation?
That's what I do in that situation, and it puts a stop to it instantly, because the last thing people who spread rumors about other people expect, is the people to confront them about it. When you do, they realize they can't get away with it and stop.
