I'm sorry that this is late in coming, but I hope it can help anyway.
Starting with the circle and the diamond shape, it's entirely possible that you were calling on corners, or Watchtowers, to help protect you within the circle. This is common practice in many traditions and methods, it adds an extra oomph to your work because you're involving some very powerful spirits. Since you're placing corners in a circle, it typically looks like a diamond shape.
Secondly, don't be afraid of causing harm to yourself. We have a saying we use, "an' it harm none". We typically put that at the end of chants, spells, invocations, evocations, etc. as a kind of safety. Energy is directed by our will, and manifested toward a goal, but energy follows the path of least resistance. By saying "an it harm none", we place a restriction on our subconscious will, putting big stumbling blocks in the way of harmful paths the energy could take. If you're ever worried about a bad end to something you're doing, just place a safety at the end, and you (as well as everyone else) will be fine.
