Well here's the advantage: When you begin studying and understanding these things about yourself, you generally learn about them in a structured way. This means you start slow, you explore a bit at a time. You learn that, for instance, the more conscious control you have over your emotions, the more control you have over your abilities. To be fair, ignoring something won't make it less destructive. Seek to learn about it, understand it, and control it. With study, things become safer by default. It's like any other skill, it needs to be learned, then it needs to be practiced.
As far as finding a path, well, that's personal choice. We all have abilities, and we all have a way of life that helps define those abilities. Sometimes we ritualise them, conscious or unconsciously, as a tool to focus them. Some people don't need the ritual. Take me, for instance. I study martial arts, and I am very aware of my ki flow. I can manipulate that flow without setting myself in a stance, performing the kuji-kiri, or finding One Point. I do these things anyway to help focus, but they are not necessary. Don't worry about having a path or not. Just worry about where you want to go next.
