I am disappointed to have to agree with you. But, I do. Most modern texts on "New Age" subjects are a major let down. With the exception of the extremely rare find, most of the books I have read haven't taught me anything that I couldn't have learned from watching the History channel during the month of October.
Odd as it may seem, the best works that I have read lately are part of a fictional series written by Jim Butcher. Perhaps some of you have heard of the series. It is called the Dresden Files.
For those of you who were fans of the TV show of the same name, I STRONGLY advise reading the book series. In my opinion, the only thing that Scifi got right was the physical description of Harry Dresden. Everything else about the show was grossly inaccurate.
From the standpoint of a practitioner, I have found the magickal detective novels refreshingly close to either reality or lore.
It is particularly helpful with potions. As, Harry is (out of financial necessity) a very practical wizard. I have yet to read a concoction that couldn't work in either theory or practical application. If nothing else, they spark the imagination to experiment with adaptation possibilities.
