As most of you know, I created a large garden in the back of my building. But the same thing happens every year. I plant about 200 bulbs and many get eaten by squirrels before they get a chance to sprout, and the rest get eaten after they sprout. So I have to buy new bulbs every year. It's really frustrating financially, and also because the many blue bells I plant are 'invasive', which means that if they didn't get eaten, they would multiply, and create a lovely blanket effect.
After looking up how to get squirrels to stay out of the garden, and talking to several people, the thing I heard the most was to add something called 'blood meal' to the soil every few months. So I did...as well as crushed chili peppers because I couldn't find a large family pack of cayenne pepper.
At first I thought it was actually attracting them (and raccoons), as a few days after I added it in Feb, there were a few holes in the garden, followed by a giant hole made by some sort of burrowing animal in the ground against the building. When I pushed the dirt back in and covered it with ice water (because a portion of the building sticks out at the top causing the part of the garden next to the building to thaw while the rest is still frozen solid), I was horrified when my feet sank into the ground as I neared the hole. Needless to say, I was not expecting to see more than about 20 sprouts (the daffodils I planted which I later learned where poisonous to squirrels).
To my surprise and great delight, the day after I did my Spring Sabbat ritual in the garden, and watered it for the 1st time (for an hour),and blessed it, the following day, the one foot of the front of the garden (which didn't have a single sprout), now had over 30, and the garden had twice as many shoots as it ever had! YEAH!!
Oh blast...I'm rambling again. Sorry.
Anyway...
I just woke up and immediately started to write a spell hardly realizing I was doing it, and although I don't claim to be a good poet, this is by far, the crappiest one I've ever written, and wondered if any of you might be able to help me spice it up a bit.
Yesterday I bought a giant bag of sunflower seeds because I saw a squirrel who was so hungry and desperate I could feel it's hunger. I can't stand the thought of the poor little ones starving, so this is what I've come up with. And I am VERY aware of how bad it is, so don't feel shy or think you'll hurt my feelings with any of your comments or suggestions...and on to the spell/prayer.....
-----------------------------------------------
Local squirrels, young and old, large and small,
That dig and climb,
Looking for food on ground and high over head.
I humbly offer this food to you,
To nourish you and keep you from my flower bed.
I vow to always give you food from this day on,
And ask in return that you leave my bulbs alone.
Divine energy, bless this food that I place on the ground.
May it nourish the squirrels all year round.

Well? Pretty crappy I know, but I've only been up for about a 1/2 an hour
(haven't even had my morning tea), and while I can usually come up with a pretty decent sounding prayer/spell in minutes, while it says what I feel, it just seems flat and lacks flow. Do any of you have any suggestions on how I can improve it? Thank you in advance to anyone that does...now I'm going back to bed
.
