Your story about the people in the grocery store being startled by your kindness reminds me of somehting that happened to me recently. I got a call from one of those telemarketers, and after I told him I didn't want to buy what he was selling I said, "Have a nice day." Generally people just hang up on telemarketers, or tell them to eff off. You could tell the guy was genuinely surprised that I wanted him to have a nice day! He got all stuttery and wished me well too. It felt nice to be nice, but it also made me kind of sad.
