I am extremely polite to telemarketers. I live in a very rich neighborhood and get at least 1 or 2 calls a month. I got one this morning, but my machine got it. I always say something like "Sorry love, but I'm not interested in (fill in the blank), but I hope you make a bunch of sales. Have a wonderful day love. They react just like you described. Why be b###hy to someone who is only guilty of doing their job?
To me, it feels good to be nice to people that most people are rude to, or just ignore...like the mail person (whom I leave a Yule card for every year wishing them well, and thanking them for doing such a good job.
I don't know if it's still in the archives, but last year, my computer was breaking down on almost a daily basis. It had a 1 year warranty that covered paying for shipping, replacing parts and so on. I spoke to about a hundred technicians over the year (and I'm not exaggerating)and knew the technical support number by heart.
Over the span of the year every component in my computer eventually got replaced (I had to send it back to the depot 4 times
!) My warranty ended in April of last year, but they were still in the process of trying to fix it, so the technicians (who I was always SUPER polite to) would keep extending the warranty.
By June my computer still wasn't working properly, and even one of the technicians (who looked at the record of all the back and forth calls, scans I had to run...etc, remarked that I sounded tired of the whole ordeal. I apologized and was trying to tell him that I wasn't aware it was obvious when he put me on hold to speak to a supervisor.
He came back and said "Do you want a new computer?", I said, "No love, I just want to fix my computer." He put me on hold again, came back and said they were going to send me a new computer (an newer version that was worth 3 HUNDRED dollars more than the one I had
!
I was so shocked and relieved, that I wasn't going to be stuck with, what I referred to as my "Crap Top", I burst into tears, and pleaded with him to let me speak to the person who was responsible. I just gushed with relief and appreciation. I was horrified when the supervisor said that the technicians usually speak to, let's just say, VERY rude people, and told me of an incident where a customer repeatedly called, referring to the technicians as 'monkeys'.
I am thoroughly convinced that had I not consistently been extremely polite, and friendly to every technician I spoke to (which surprised them so much, a few even noted it in my 'file'.), my warranty would not have been extended 3 months, and I certainly would not have received not only a new computer, but one that was more expensive, despite the fact that I never even made the slightest indication that I wanted them to replace it.
The technicians always seemed to expect me to start yelling at them. I would say "I would yell at you if you broke into my home with a hammer and smashed my computer to bits, but it's not like you personally broke it, so why should I be upset with the person who is trying to help me fix it?
I feel good inside when I am polite to people used to being treated like crap, and really don't understand why people do. And from the story I just told you...it can REALLY pay off to be nice
. Thanks for sharing your story. It never hurts to remind people that telemarketers and such are not on a mission to piss you off, they are just doing their job, and that's no reason to be cruel to someone.
