I'm a little late to the conversation, but the first spell book I had was the "Book of 5000 spells" by Judika Illes. I found it very informative in the beginning. It gave a lot of the history of the witch along with spells, but did indicate that spellcraft was basically up to you personally. It eventually became a reference book for me. It's gone now due to a trash day episode. I found this website to be just as informative, if not more.
