One of my favorite types of homemade pendulums (since I'm a big ole sap) is a wedding or engagement ring on the end of a string. My uncle used that on my mom to determine the sexes of all her children (with 100% accuracy I might add). Obviously if you're not married or engaged, any ring that has personal meaning would work great as well.
