I'm having a similiar experience...for months now I've been asking to meet my totem. I thought I was getting no results, but all the while I was havings dreams (and one nightmare) about spiders. My room has always been full of them, but I can never bring myself to kill them, and it wasn't like I was afraid of them. I remember once being the only girl in a room full of them who didn't shriek when a spider was found on the floor. 
Then one day I was walking along the beach with a friend, and it just kind of clicked. So right now I'm trying to figure out if this is actually my totem or just some kind of message.
Interestingly enough, that same day on the beach me and my friend saw a pair of swans swimming together in the lake.
