In addition to the wonderful info already on this thread, I just wanted to add a few 'practise' techniques I recently learned about.
One thing you can do is hold the pendulum as you normally would, and stare at it, thinking 'clockwise, clockwise.'(WITHOUT making any effort to move your arm, hand or fingers!) Obviously, it will start to move clockwise, because you are conciously making it so.
Follow this up by staring at the pendulum and thinking ONLY a question, until it begins to move in answer. Supposedly, by doing this, you'll begin to be able to recognize when you are 'cheating', and when you are recieving an actual truthful message from your Higher Self.
Another easy exercise to hone your pendulum skills is to take four cards from an ordinary deck(or a tarot deck, if you prefer!)and choose one...the ace of spades, say. Shuffle the 4 cards until you honestly dont know where the ace of spades is, and then lay them out face down on a table. Then hold your pendulum over each card and ask "Is this the ace of spades?" It SHOULD say no thrice and yes once. Check if it was right. If nothing else, it makes a fun game to play when you're bored!
(a word of caution...don't do this around people who are likely to make fun of it. Their doubt seems to contaminate the exercise. Trust me, I learned the hard way
)
Finally, this is one tip I see quite often around the internet; don't look directly at the pendulum while asking it questions. Try to watch it out of the corner of your eye...it's supposed to help prevent accidental cheating, since if you STARE at it you're pretty much willing it to move.
Obviously these are tailored towards uber-beginners (like yours truly) but I enjoy them so I thought I'd share.
Blessings
