Hi Love,
I haven't read anyone else's responses, so forgive me if I repeat what has already been posted.
First I wanted to let you know that I, along with everyone in my building participated in Earth Day. I just never got around to telling you.
A week before hand, I put a memo on the front and back doors along with everyone's apt numbers. I taped a pen on a string and asked anyone who was going to celebrate to place a check mark next to there apt #. And in the memo I added that if anyone was in need of candles or matches, I have tons which I would leave in a box outside my apt and said there was enough candles for everyone to take four, and one pack of matches. Everyone was actually quite happy to participate, and while some took candles and matches, 2 others left me lovely candle holders, or a Thank You note. On to the spell question...
As the moon was close to the new moon phase on that day, it was a perfect time to do magick. But as most of my neighbors ended up sitting around my garden (where I was going to to my work), I had to put it off.
As for honoring the Earth. I usually do very simple things. In my experience (and I've been doing this for over 35 years), the best way you can truly honor the Earth is to REALLY look at and Her, and appreciate what most find as irritating or simply don't even look at, and harm her as little as possible. To use a popular phrase, a simple way is to REALLY 'Stop and smell the roses'.
Instead of rushing past a store that has bunches of flowers out front...stop, look at the flowers carefully, you'll notice things you never saw before, smell them, appreciate them, THEN continue on your way. Look at the nature around your home...really closely (if you have a magnifying glass, all the better). Look as closely as you would if you had to write an essay about it. Go to places where nature is abundant like nearby forests, lakes or conservatories, the latter can truly be fascinating when one doesn't just take a quick look at each plant and rush through.
Meditate or just read under the shade of a tree, but first, feel it's bark. Gently stroke it, and closely look at it's unique pattern, look up at the branches, feel the texture of it's leaves. And notice the differences each type of tree has. I not only do that, but even if there are people around, I will literally hug trees, close my eyes and feel their energy. While I've often done this in front of people, no one has ever yelled out some demeaning comment, or even seemed to notice.
Other ways is to do things like spreading wild flower seeds around a natural area during the spring equinox, or just in Spring time in general. Plant something, care for it, and watch it grow and thrive in your care. It can truly be an amazing feeling to know that had you not planted (fill in the blank), it would not exist, have plants in your home, make a garden like I did, put up bird feeders, put out nuts and seeds for local animals...etc.
One of the biggest things you can do to honor the Earth is to give it an offering of your menstrual blood. Use it to nourish a plant that looks like it isn't doing too well. You can make 'Holey Water' by blessing, and adding your energy to it, and pour it on the Earth. You can create a poem to express your love of Her and read it in a spot that you like to spend time in. You don't need tools to do a ritual for the Earth, unless YOU feel like you do. And if you DO feel like you need tools, use ones that feel right to YOU. Don't just use it because you saw it on some web site (including mine). I suggest you read the page on my web site called "Tools of the Craft" in the Magick Section.
http://www.pathcom.com/~newmoon/tools.htm
It will put the whole matter of what tools you really need into proper perspective. Use the link provided or go to the front page of my web site by pressing the button beside the one you press to post a message. On to 'Spell Books'.
I honestly think that the only reason they are filled with spells for love & money is because as sad as it is, that is what most people are looking for. And they aren't using common sense (which I heavily stress on my web site). If they did, they would realize that if these spells actually worked, there wouldn't BE hundreds of ridiculous spell books, filled with the same type of spells(which you noticed), that to the learned, are really just sources of laughter
. If you look in the string further down the page called 'Books', there is a recommendation for a good spell book you can probably get on Ebay. If not, you can order it from your favorite on line book store. I suggest either 'Chapters' or 'Amazon'.
If you are looking for herbal, gemstone, and other references, I have a number of them on my web site (that tell you what they are used for). But something I want to say, which I am adding to my web site update, is that reference tables should be viewed as suggestions...not facts. Magick works differently for different people.
For example you can see roses listed on web sites as tokens of love. But think about it this way, and it changes the meaning entirely. Real roses (that have not been engineered not to produce them) have razor sharp thorns.
If you planted natural rose bushes around your house, that had thorns, burglars would certainly think twice about trying to break in as they would not want to risk being covered in cuts and blood from falling into a rose bush. Now do they sound like tokens of love? Can you see how you could use a rose in a protection spell as opposed to a love spell? Always use common sense...and your brain when it comes to anything related to Witchcraft, or Paganism in general.
Also keep in mind that you can bury or even crush gemstones and sprinkle them on the Earth. For some reason I find that a lot of people don't know that. The best tools are ALWAYS the ones that seem to 'call' to you, or simply thing of yourself.
I hope this helped you in some small way and didn't confuse you
.
