I have used a very similar technique over the years when teaching neophytes how to manipulate energy. In addition to what you describe, I will also ask them to change the "texture" of the energy ball and pass it to the person beside them and see if he or she can feel what it is. It's a rather fun way to teach without it seeming like it is a lesson.
On a side note, I apologize for not being as active a poster. My little guy is keeping me on my toes and I'm getting closer to founding a Pagan Church here. At this point, I'm simply waiting for my attorney to get back to me to see what my next move needs to be.
