I really hope this post doesn't offend anybody, but this was bothering me and I didn't know where else to get it off my chest. Obviously it's all just my opinions, for better or worse.
I was on one of my research binges tonight (when I'm supposed to be sleeping...d'oh!) and ran across two craft related things that made me very uncomfortable, even just to think of.
On one site I found instructions on Graveyard Magic, which is using specific grave dirt to use in spellwork (or so this person said). They had very specific instructions, like using the grave dirt of an old man for wisdom, of a child for youthfulness and joy, etc.
Now, i understand using the grave dirt of someone you loved in life. One lady used her fathers as a representation of Earth. But actually going to a graveyard and picking and choosing among the dead...not only is it objectfying the people, imo, reducing them to mere ingredients, but you could be completely contradicting their wishes in life. I don't think a Christian man would appreciate something from his resting place being used in a spell!!
The other thing that made me very uncomfortable was the wiccan Great Rite. I've been putting off looking into it for months, because I knew I wouldn't like it...and I was right. I understand that its meant to reinact the creation and union of the God and Goddess, and because you are invoking them the sex is appropriate. I also understand that to reach the third degree of a traditional coven you don't HAVE to have a physical Great Rite, but can instead just use a chalice and athame. And obviously I know I'm being a huge whiner since this whole thing doesn't even apply to me anyway, since I'm not a wiccan by any stretch. But I still find the notion that you have to sleep with your teacher to attain a higher level intensely disturbing. Even the athame and chalice thing is too much for me, because the sentiment is still there.
Thank you for the ranting space, I feel much better. Has anyone else had this sort of experience where some craft-related practise has just been, well, too much?
