Gee...the 'silver tongued ex boyfriend'...another thing that Crystal Wolf and I have in common...how odd. (I'm being sarcastic
).
The power of people who have a pleasing or distinctive voice can be shocking. It's the reason celebrities such as Patrick Stuart (Capt. Picard of Startreck TNG and X-Men) & James Earl Jones (Voice of Darth Vadar in Star Wars & "This is CNN") get countless offers to be voices in commercials and animated series. They both have very distinctive voices that are authoritative yet trustworthy.
One of my dearest friends, a woman I met on a bus when I was in high school over 30 years ago, who is now 60 (close to 20 years older than me), was a telemarketer when I met her. She was also someone with a serious mental problem, and was referred to by everyone I introduced her to, as "Crazy (her name)." Not exactly a great candidate for getting ANY job.
The most common thing telemarketers experience on a minute to minute basis, is people either verbally abusing them and hanging up, or simply hanging up on them.
But such was not the case with her. She has been doing phone related work her whole life and is the only telemarketer I have EVER heard of who, has NEVER, in her over 30 years...had someone actually hang up on her...ever.
While I initially thought she was full of crap when she told me that long ago, when I ended up working at the same place (sitting next to her) and not only witnessed her 'magick voice' in action, never having a single person hang up, as well as a boss that confirmed it, I was absolutely shocked. And when she left that job, even though her boss begged her to stay and offered to give her a raise, she 'didn't like the energy', and left. To try and keep the quota of sales she made, her former boss had to hire FIVE people to 'try' and make the same amount of sales she made...but never did.
And despite the fact that she smokes quite a bit, her voice has remained 'frozen in time'. After loosing contact with her for a while, then hearing from her via phone and noticing that she still sounded like she was in her 20's, I found out her voice managed to help her go from being a low paid telemarketer to the highly paid 'voice of' a major mining company. It is basically unheard of for a woman to get a job in that industry...(even as a receptionist) where she lives.
Had she not been born with her hypnotically lovely 'magick voice' that can (phone wise), basically convince anyone to do anything, she would basically be unemployable due to her mental condition. To be fair to her, she had undergone a great amount of therapy, and is no longer referred to as "Crazy (name)" which is great because anyone that referred to her as that almost got their tongues ripped out by me.
As for my own voice, once I was out of my 20's, for some reason I got countless remarks on what a 'lovely voice' I had. For me, that voice convinced the Dell Cooperation to not only extend the warranty on my computer 4 months after it expired (without ever asking if they would) and managed to convince them to replace my computer with a newer, more expensive model, yet when they asked me if I wanted a new computer I said "No, I just want to fix my computer". I spoke to several technical people and most would remark on how 'lovely and polite' I sounded.
There are 3 morals to this story:
* NEVER underestimate the power of someone's voice.
*Steer clear of people with attractive voices that are aware of it's power, and take advantage of it in a negative manner.
*And if you want something from a major company, a pleasant voice that demands nothing, will usually get what they want...or better. (even if they say they don't want it)
